Two techniques have more experimental support behind them than any other study method: spaced repetition and active recall. Both are straightforward to describe, both are well replicated, and both are largely absent from how most students actually study.

Active recall

Active recall means retrieving information from memory rather than reviewing it. Answering a question without looking, closing the book and writing down what you remember, explaining a concept aloud — all are retrieval.

The comparison that makes the point is with re-reading. Re-reading feels productive because the material becomes familiar, and familiarity is easily mistaken for knowledge. Retrieval feels harder and produces noticeably better retention. The effort is the mechanism, not a side effect.

If a study session feels comfortable, it is probably building familiarity rather than memory. Difficulty during retrieval is what makes the memory durable.

Spaced repetition

Spacing concerns when review happens. Reviewing material several times in one sitting produces weaker long-term retention than spreading the same number of reviews across days or weeks. The forgetting that occurs between sessions is precisely what makes the next retrieval effective.

This runs against the instinct to cram, which does work for a test the next morning and works poorly for anything beyond it. For material a student needs to retain across a year — or into an exam season — spacing is decisive.

Putting both into practice

  • End a study session by closing the book and writing down what you remember, then check what was missed.
  • Revisit a topic a few days later, then a week later, then a few weeks later, rather than repeatedly on one day.
  • Turn notes into questions as you take them, so the material is already in retrievable form.
  • Treat a wrong answer during practice as the most useful event in the session — it identifies exactly what to review.

Why tutoring suits these methods

Both techniques are hard to sustain alone, because both feel worse than the alternatives while working better. A tutor provides the structure: asking a student to explain rather than confirm, returning to a topic deliberately after a gap, and noticing when apparent understanding is really familiarity.

Watching a student's written working — rather than only their final answers — makes this far easier, since a method error is visible in the working long before it shows up in a wrong result.
